Vehicle Restrictions Being Lifted Wednesday Morning on Upper Red Lake

BELTRAMI CO., Minn. (KVRR) — The order restricting vehicle access on Upper Red Lake is being lifted at sunrise on Wednesday.

Recent observations of the lake show that it has iced over.

The ice that was shifting causing the open water has locked up, leaving little room for the ice to shift.

The shifting ice last month left a number of people stranded and they had to be rescued.

Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs imposed the order restricting vehicles on December 30.

Officials now say that while the thickness and integrity of the ice has improved, it can never be considered 100% safe.
