HPV Vaccines help protect against multiple types of cancer including Cervical Cancer
WEST FARGO, N.D., (KVRR)- January is cervical cancer awareness month and an HPV vaccine can help prevent it. HPV is a virus transmitted through human contact that can cause multiple types of cancer including cervical cancer.
The HPV vaccine is a two dose treatment that was first rolled out in 2006. This vaccine is approved for anyone between 9 years old to 45, and doctors recommend getting it as early as possible for stronger immunity. Dr. Brandon Meyer, Sanford Health General Pediatrician, said “We can prevent these cancers from ever occurring by vaccinating early.”
Dr. Meyer also said, “So we typically like to start around age 9 now. It’s a 2 dose series if you start early enough so if you bring your kid in for a checkup between the ages of 9 and 11, expect to have a conversation about starting HPV vaccination.”
If you notice HPV symptoms, contact a medical professional right away.
