A Detroit Lakes gym is providing space for students with disabilities
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KVRR) – Out in Detroit Lakes, a gym is providing a safe environment for kids who have a disability. Whether it’s physical or mental. Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics and Fitness is giving them a chance to exercise and have some fun.
“Super important for them to be able to get out into the community. Sometimes they are not able to as much and it’s really important for them to be able to learn how to move their bodies correctly,” said Taylor Kohler, a special education teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School. “Also, get that energy out. Get that exercise. I have some students with some physical disabilities as well and it is really helpful for them to just gain that strength here as well.”
The FlyTime program is led by the gym and they raise money to pay the people who run it. Giving Hearts Day is the only fundraiser they participate in for FlyTime.
“That day is super important to us. Again it helps provide this program for these athletes free of charge.” said Leesa Lindgaard, the executive director of Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics and Fitness.
Regardless of the money, this program benefits many kids in the region. You can hear it and see how much these kids enjoy this opportunity.
“Love coming out and watching these kiddos and adults again move, smile and enjoy their time here,” said Lindgaard. “They get to spend an hour with us and it’s the highlight of my day and week.”
