Small Group of Republican Lawmakers Want A Vote Taken on New State Flag

ST. PAUL (KVRR) — A small group of Republican lawmakers are calling on the legislature to take a vote on the final designs for the new state flag and seal, or let the people decide.

The new flag is meant to represent Minnesota’s motto: The Star of the North.

Some rural county commissions have passed resolutions against the new design.

DFL lawmakers had raised concerns about the existing flag being insensitive to some groups.

The new flag and seal are expected to become official on May 11 which is Statehood Day.

“Most of the members of the commission didn’t read the stuff that came from the people in the public. This was never catalogued or organized by the commission,” said  State Sen. Steve Drazkowski, a Republican from Mazeppa.

Minnesota GOP is selling t-shirts featuring the historic flag on its website, in its effort to save the flag.
