Are weight loss drugs causing a baby boom?

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Are we seeing a baby boom due to weight loss drugs? That could be the case in the U.S.

In North Dakota, medical experts are saying that there could be a connection between women becoming pregnant and weight loss. These drugs are called GLP-1 that help with weight loss.

Dr. Rachel Wanzek with Sanford in Jamestown has seen this has also increased the likeliness of someone becoming pregnant. This is because the more weight a woman has the more it impacts ovulation. Wanzek says patients need to be careful when it comes to the possibility of becoming pregnant.

“To be careful about getting pregnant and using contraception while they are on the medication for weight loss and then again really highlighting that need for a two-month washout before actively trying to conceive.” said Dr. Wanzek.

She says for women looking to lose weight while using these types of drugs and don’t want to become pregnant, they should use another layer of birth control.
