Clay County Sheriff’s Office warns of new phone scam
MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – A new phone scam has popped up in Clay County, as someone is posing as law enforcement. According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, this new scam states on the phone that they have urgent legal documents and requires a call back.
The scam number has a 620 area code. Local law enforcement says no members of their departments will ask for money or require other payment options.
“Unfortunately we do get a lot of phone calls of people who have fallen victim to scams. So I guess remind people, stop, think about the scam and contact your local police department.” said Rhonda Jorgensen, a West Fargo Police Dept. Community Engagement Officer.
Here are some tips from the Federal Trade Commission to avoid being scammed:
- Scammers pretend to be from an organization
- They say there’s a problem or prize
- Pressure you to act immediately
- They tell you to pay in a specific way
If you are ever suspicious of a phone call or suspect a scammer, you are asked to call your local law enforcement.
