Smoky conditions expected for the summer

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Throughout the region, the air has been smoky and hazy as of late.

Due to Canadian wildfires and weather patterns, smoke from those wildfires has moved south and has impacted the region.

This smoke can have many impacts, including cooling the region when aloft in the atmosphere, and impacting air quality when on the surface.

Bad air quality can impact people sensitive to the smoke to feel negative impacts, like coughing and dry and itchy eyes

For the summer, the National Weather Service expects these conditions to be more common due to climate change.

Tommy Grafenauer, NWS Grand Forks Meteorologist, said, “We do anticipate periods of smoke throughout the summer. As the atmospheric conditions are favorable to transport the smoke southward into the United States from Canada and I would say it is becoming a more common occurrence.”

These Canadian wildfires are good for their forests as it helps to repopulate them
