Fire destroys abandoned home near Hawley

HAWLEY, Minn. (KVRR) – Investigators will try to determine the cause of a fire at an abandoned house in rural Hawley.

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says crews from several departments responded to the blaze early Thursday at 231 270th Street North.

Empting says the house was engulfed in flames and the roof of the garage collapsed before firefighters arrived.

He says deputies knew that the house had been abandoned for several years. The sheriff’s office has responded to the residence in the past for reports of people trespassing.

It is believed the fire started between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 2:49 a.m.
