Navy Week: Talking to the Navy’s meteorologists
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – When most people think of Navy jobs, they think of sailors and seals, but as part of Navy Week, we’re highlighting the work of one of the Navy’s overlooked jobs, Aerographers. Aerographers are the Navy’s Meteorologists and Oceanographers, predicting weather patterns to aid in Navy missions.
“Protecting government resources, protecting government people, and just making sure that operations can be carried out quickly and efficiently with minimal delays”
And their forecasting area, well let’s just say it’s a lot bigger than ours.
“Maritime forecasting all the way over to Japan and some of the Indian Ocean and the Middle East”
Martin adds that while Aerographers may be overlooked, all the jobs in the Navy serve an important role in accomplishing their missions.
“I feel like our job is pretty overlooked but I feel like it’s critically important to be able to ensure the safety of every other job in the navy essentially. So every job in the navy is important. We all like to joke and say one is more important than the other, but I think at the end of the day it is very codependent. I think if any job in the navy were to go away, the impact would be detrimental and it would be felt navy-wide.”
