LIVE: National Wear Red Day

Fargo, N.D. (KVRR) — While many may know the risks that cardiovascular disease poses, but you might not know that it’s the number one killer of women.

That’s why every year on the first Friday of February people wear red to raise awareness of the dangers that heart disease can pose to women.

Part of the lack of awreness stems from the fact that cardiovascular disease looks different in women and men. Women’s symptoms are different. Women are more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

The American Heart Association says that this can lead some women to not seek out help for their condition.

“Really listening to our bodies, as Kate talked about. Checking in with your primary healthcare provider is really important. If something feels off, if you feel tense and heavy stress, talk to your doctor about it.”
