CLAY CO., Minn. (KVRR) — White Earth Reservation Tribal Council is responding to reports that the tribe has purchased off-reservation land east of Moorhead.

The tribe says any speculation “regarding specific projects, including gaming facilities, is premature”.

The tribe bought a section of land in Clay County in the northwest corner of the intersection of I-94 and State Highway 336.

According to the county, the 280 acre lot was purchased last December through a land auction for $3.9 million.

Earlier in the year, the tribe bought the lot of the former JL Beers in Moorhead for $850,000 for a dispensary.

A tribal spokesman says White Earth is “exploring opportunities to diversify our economic initiatives.”

They say that may include housing, education, environmental preservation, business development, and cultural enrichment.

Clay County Administrator Stephen Larson says the tribe has not applied for any permits for its latest land purchase and there have not been any formal discussions.
