Sen. Kevin Cramer Reacts to President Trump’s Tariffs

The Senator acknowledged that some of his Republican colleagues raised interesting points when it came to checks and balances at the federal level, but still supports the tariffs overall.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The markets took quite the tumble March 3rd, as the three major composite indexes posted their worst single-day losses since 2020.

This came on the heels of “Liberation Day,” or what Trump named his two-part tariff rollout.

Which was made up in part of a reciprocal tariff program.

Some economists take issue with the way these reciprocal tariffs were calculated, and then applied, but Cramer appreciates the White House’s approach. He believes it could have been more extreme, and that countries should be incentivized to work with Washington, not retaliate.

“I think, for the most part, they should look at these numbers and go, ‘ok, it’s better than I thought,'” he explained.

Some Congressional Republicans such as Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley have spoken out against the President, saying that he’s violating the separation of federal powers by enacting these tariffs on his own.

Cramer said he understands where they’re coming from, but that, ultimately, these tariffs will benefit the U.S. economy, and, therefore, its citizens.

“I believe we’ll start bringing those markets back up,” he said, referring to the drop on Wall Street –

“but, more importantly, we’ll drive more jobs and more economic opportunity for Americans.”
