Talking 50 Years of “Slow Ride” With the Lead Singer of Foghat Before They Perform in Mahnomen, MN

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) –A band formed in London in the early 1970s is celebrating 50 years of its biggest hit, “Slow Ride”.

You can catch Foghat live in concert at Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen on Friday night.

KVRR anchor and music fan TJ Nelson got a chance to catch up with the latest lead singer, Scott Holt.

It all started with that drum beat, blaring through radio speakers around the world in 1975.

“Slow ride, take it easy.”

Fast-forward 50 years and it still sounds just as good.

“Slow ride, take it easy.”

“I think what they created has stood the test of time. A song like “Slow Ride” is iconic,” said Holt.

The new guy on lead vocals, Scott Holt, joined the band in 2022.

“I’ve worked with the guys writing songs and stuff working in the studio and filled in for the previous lead singer, Charlie Huhn, on a couple of occasions. And then when he decided to retire about three years ago they offered me the shot and I took it. I was grateful to get it.”

“What is it like for a new guy coming in with an established band and the sound that they have? Do you have to try to make your sound one comparable to the past or do your own thing or how do you do this?,” asked TJ.

“Well, you know there’s a responsibility because you’re upholding somebody else’s work.
You know the songs that Dave wrote I don’t sing like Dave I don’t play guitar like Dave so, um, I can’t help but do what I do.”

“But you also have to remember that you’re carrying on this legacy and you have to treat that with respect so, um, you’re never going to hear us play the reggae version of “Slow Ride” or the calypso version of “I Just Want To Make Love To You” we stay in our lane so to speak.

“My name’s Scott, Roger Earl on the drums, we are Foghat!”

“Yeah when you’ve got an iconic song like that you don’t want it messed with really,” said TJ.

“Yeah, I mean you know, it’s like putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Nobody wants to see that.”

Holt also told me he can’t wait to get back to Minnesota since he has spent some time in the state including recording an album in Minneapolis.

There are a limited number of tickets left for the Friday night show at Shooting Star.

You can get them online at StarCasino.com.
