FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Concerns over a loss of federal funding due to President Trump’s executive orders had Fargo School Board voting to remove its philosophies from the district’s website.

They voted 7-2 to “sunset” philosophies recognizing students with disabilities and rights of LGBTQ+ students.

The issue was brought forward by school district attorney Tara Brandner.

She said not complying with Trump’s orders could put millions of dollars of federal funding on the line.

Last year the district received $15 million in federal grants and $4.5 million to fund meals.

A few community members showed up to speak out against the motion.

“Especially with rhetoric from The White House claiming that recognizing a child’s preferred name is child abuse and that children with autism destroy families, these children face intense trauma,” said Joseph Kennedy of Fargo.

“Although I’m advising the board to remove these philosophies I would like to reassure both the board, and the students, parents and communities of the Fargo Public School District that this district remains committed to creating a supportive, inclusive and positive school climate for all students,” said Brandner.

The board also voted to grant Dr. Rupak Gandhi’s request to resign in early June instead of late June due to scheduling issues.

Dr. Bob Grosz will be the interim superintendent until July when Dr. Cory Steiner assumes the position.
