Volunteers plant trees along the Red River in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — Volunteers with River Keepers Fargo-Moorhead were busy planting trees for future generations to enjoy along the Red River Thursday.

Around 60 volunteers arrived on the picturesque day to plant about 350 trees including Accolade Elm, Northern Acclaim Honey Locust, Hackberry, Bur Oak, and Kentucky Coffeetree.

Many of the tree species can be found in southern Minnesota.

They are planting these species due to their ability to handle the rising average temperature of our area.

The trees came from Swedberg Nursery in Battle Lake, Minnesota.

River Keepers is also planning many upcoming events for this summer.

“We do cleanups along the riverfront with both the Fargo Park District and Moorhead Parks and Rec., and lots of volunteers are needed for that,” said Riverkeepers Executive Director Christine Holland. “Storm drain marking continuously throughout the summer. We have a youth fishing clinic coming up in June. And as soon as the river slows down a little bit, we’ll open canoe and kayak rentals and our river paddling expedition.”
