Vera C. Rubin Observatory Releases First Photos
Dr. Sara Schultz, Planetarium Director at MSUM, has been to Chile to see the site in person.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – MSUM Planetarium held a screening of a live reveal of never-before-seen pictures of space.
The Vera C. Rubin observatory in Chile began recording the sky for the first time in October of 2024, and just released those images to the public.
The telescope takes video of the sky in detail that was previously unthinkable, thanks to the largest digital camera ever constructed.
Dr. Sara Schultz visited the observatory when it was under construction and was blown away by the photos.
She says the scientific potential is endless.
“It just makes it more exciting to be able to bring that to my students, people that come to the planetarium,” explained Schultz, “just being able to say, ‘We think we know a lot – but look at all of this out here we don’t even understand yet.'”
The screening of the press conference at the planetarium was free for the public to attend.
