Update: 2,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid leak at Cargill plant near Wahpeton

(UPDATE 6:30 PM) — Sheriff Gary Ruhl said a hazardous materials team from the Fargo Fire Department was able to stop the leak late Monday afternoon.

WAHPETON, N.D. (KVRR) – A hydrochloric acid leak at the Cargill Plant near Wahpeton Monday led to at least two evacuations and a shelter-in-place order for everyone within three miles.

Richland County Emergency Manager Brett Lambrecht says the leak involved an estimated 2,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid.

A Richland County deputy earlier said the size of the leak was about 16,000 gallons.

A one-mile radius was evacuated around the plant and a shelter-in-place advisory was issued for a three-mile radius.

The leak was reported around 5:45 a.m. Hazmat teams from Fargo were called to help seal the tank.

No injuries have been reported.

The National Institutes of health says hydrochloric acid solution is a colorless watery liquid with a sharp, irritating odor. Exposure can cause severe burns, irritation, and damage to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system.
