Long time West Fargo couple receive recognition for their service to the community
WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — “It’s kind of overwhelming, it was nothing I was thinking would ever happen, you know. We just try to do what we do for the community and it just happened to work out that way I guess,” said Steve Baron.
“It’s an honor…I’m just beyond thankful,” said Sue Baron.
The Barons are long-time West Fargo residents and volunteers. And this year, the City of West Fargo selected the couple to celebrate their work and dedication to the community.
“I’ve always grown up to give back. I’ve learned that from my parents a long time ago that do something if you’re able to help people out, do what you can to help them,” said Steve Baron.
Since 1997, Steve Baron has served the City of West Fargo as a firefighter. And in 2019, he was named the West Fargo Rural Fire Department Chief. Serving both the West Fargo and rural communities.
“My dad grew up doing firefighting when I was a kid, so it kind of grew from that. Watching him run off to fire calls and me following the fire trucks, just wanted to do something to help the community,” said Steve Baron.
Sue Baron started Golden Drive Homeless Kids in 2013. Starting out by saving leftover crayons and coloring books, the non-profit has continuously grown. Helping homeless kids across the community with food, clothes, hygiene products, and gifts.
“So many people are touched with helping. Whether it’s our great volunteers, our great awesome supporters, but just to see the effect of giving our homeless kids hope, and just we’ve had many that come in groups and also volunteer. But just seeing the positive effect it has on the community, and it’s so easy to make a difference,” said Sue Baron.
The tree will be planted at Tintes Park
