Grand Forks City Council member one of two finalists to become police chief in Bismarck

BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — A Grand Forks City Council member is one of two candidates to become the next police chief in Bismarck.

Danny Weigel is currently a lieutenant with UND Police.

He represents Ward 1 on the city council and was first elected in 2016.

Weigel is a 2018 UND graduate.

The other candidate for the job is Jason Stugelmeyer, a deputy chief with Bismarck Police Department.

He is a 2000 graduate of MSUM.

Following the interview process, the 5-member panel will make its recommendation to Bismarck City Commission on July 22.

Current Bismarck Police Chief Dave Draovitch is retiring at the end of the month.
