Sen. Nicole Mitchell takes the stand and admits she lied about reason to enter stepmother’s home
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KVRR) — Sen. Nicole Mitchell takes the stand to testify during her burglary trial in Detroit Lakes.
The defense called Nicole Mitchell to the witness stand. Mitchell testified that the statements she had told officers were not accurate and that she was attempting to do a wellness check.
“There was no option that seemed good to both make sure nothing happened in the meantime. But not also have to wait a couple months for either the driving thing and I also just needed to like the rest of the state. Whether it was just the driving or if we were looking at other things.”
Mitchell testified that after receiving a laptop that Carol Mitchell had said was cleared off, she looked into it. There she discovered Carol’s MyChart information that shared her medical records. Mitchell recalled how Carol had gotten lost or was forgetful, she said she had to check in on her.
“The point of checking and not riling Carol up and not having her get more paranoid would’ve been kind of futile. If one of the neighbors would have seen me and told her, hey we saw Nicole.”
On April 22,2024 Mitchell arrived at Carol Mitchell’s home wearing black from head to toe. For approximately ten minutes Mitchell was looking inside Carol’s home before the police were contacted.
“She really values her privacy. I generally did believe that its a family matter. I was hoping you know, especially for her sake, that we wouldn’t go through all this.”
Brian McDonald pointed out in Mitchell’s testimony that she said Carol values her privacy, yet Mitchell had broken in early in the morning.
After hours of testimony from Sen. Mitchell, the court is in recess until 9 a.m. Friday.
