Fargo Police announce arrest of one murder suspect and address the aftermath of Monday’s press conference

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Police have arrested a person of interest in the murder of 20-year-old Elijah Hughes. On Monday, Jamestown police arrested 20-year-old Caundre Douglas after a foot pursuit. Evidence from the scene connected Douglas to the murder of Hughes.

“Douglas was also placed under arrest at that same time for another felony level reckless endangerment incident in the 10 block of Broadway. That occurred on July 6th of this year. We’re working closely with the Cass County State Attorney’s office as they pursue charges against Douglas for all three of these deadly or potential deadly incidents within the city,” said Captain William Ahlfeldt.

Part of the news conference, Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski also addressed Monday’s news conference when he became defensive when reporters asked him about why it took so long to provide information about the incident.

“I think our interactions at the end of yesterday’s press conference went a little sideways, so I apologize if some of you feel that I didn’t fully answer your questions. And our main focus here is to get these people in custody who are responsible for these acts,” said Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski.

Early Tuesday morning, Mayor Mahoney had done an interview on KFGO, sharing that the actions taken on Sunday were not excusable and the chief’s responses to the press were not the way a police chief should respond.

“I think the press is not being unreasonable. You guys want to be able to ask questions, we may not have the answers, we may not have any suspect, we may not have anything, but at least you want to know okay somebody’s at large with a pistol, is my neighborhood safe? One gentleman is in Jamestown, obviously he wasn’t in Fargo. Another gentleman’s somewhere, none of us know where he’s at,” said Mayor Tim Mahoney.

Zibolski stated he has not yet met with the mayor in the aftermath of the conference, but soon will.
Fargo Police have not located 20-year-old Tyrque Jones and are still searching for him.
