Twin Cities man drowned while trying to save hunting dog near Ashley, ND last week

MCINTOSH CO., N.D. (KVRR) — A Champlin, Minnesota man drowned while trying to rescue his hunting dog in the Eszlinger Waterfowl Production Area last Wednesday.

That is located near Ashley, North Dakota, about an hour and a half southwest of Jamestown.

McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office says 30-year-old Christopher Hendricks was hunting with a friend when their dog went to retrieve a bird about 100 yards from shore.

When the dog got to the bird, it got caught in a thin sheet of ice.

Hendricks swam out to help the dog, but showed signs of distress.

His friend tried to assist, but Hendricks let go and slipped below the surface.

The friend was able to return to shore with the dog and called for help.

Hendricks’ body was found the next day about 40 to 50 yards from shore.
