War hero and actor to speak at UND on Wednesday

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR) — A war hero and star of “All My Children” and “Dancing With The Stars” is going to speak on Wednesday at UND.

U.S. Army Veteran J.R. Martinez will be speaking starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom and the public is invited.

He will share his remarkable story and uplifting message in a talk titled, “Overcoming Adversity with Optimism and Resilience.”

In April 2003, Martinez was driving a Humvee that struck a roadside bomb in Karbala. He was trapped inside of the burning vehicle, suffering severe burns. He spent 34 months recovering, undergoing dozens of surgeries in the years since.

Martinez will also be touring campus prior to the event and hold a meet-and-greet following the event.

Martinez is the author of the New York Times best-selling memoir “Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength and Spirit” and currently resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife and children.
