Child Hospitalized in Cass County, ND Dog Attack

UPDATE: A day after the attack, the child is still in the hospital. Law enforcement says it's too early to assess criminal liability, but penalties for this type of violation could include jail time and fines.

CHAFFEE, N.D. — A 9-year-old boy has been hospitalized, and the Cass County Sheriff says they may be recommending criminal charges against the owners of 2 dogs that attacked the boy at a home here Tuesday.

Sheriff Jesse Jahner says his deputies responded to an address in Chaffee, North Dakota on an animal bite report.

The caller told dispatchers that their 9-year-old child had been bitten multiple times from 2 dogs that had come into their yard.

Casselton Ambulance and Cass County deputies responded to the home and took the child to Sanford with what are described as extensive injuries.

The two dogs are described as Rottweilers, both under a year old. They do not belong to the family that reported the attack on their child.

They are currently impounded by the Sheriff’s office.

The investigation is described as an active one.
