MOORHEAD (KVRR-KFGO) – Despite voters passing two referendums in November 2025, the Moorhead School Board passed a resolution on Monday directing administrators to start looking into potential budget cuts.

The memo directs administration to recommend reductions in programs and positions, as needed, to reduce expenditures. The district says it’s a result of changing enrollment and financial limitations.

In November 2025, voters approved an operating levy and capital projects levy for the Moorhead Area Public School District (MAPS), which together provide $5.87 million annually to help fund the district’s budget and restore financial stability.

“Like many Minnesota districts, MAPS has faced growing financial challenges in recent years, driven by a 20-year state funding gap and rising costs. Last year, the district made $4 million in budget cuts – and will avoid an additional $5 million in cuts thanks to the voter-approved investment,” the district said after voters approved the referendums.

Superintendent Brandon Lunak says the funding will be used to support day-to-day operations and capital, technology, safety and transportation needs.

Now, the school board says administrators will start meeting with staff about buildings and programs to talk about where the district needs additions, or where reductions or shifts are needed.

The passage of the resolution on Jan. 26 starts this process.
