Family Collecting Donations for Rothsay Man Dying of Brain Cancer to Take Route 66 Trip
The family says that 63-year-old Finn Abrahamson just wants to see as much of the classic route as possible. They're raising money to purchase an RV so they all can join him and so that Finn can be comfortable while traveling.
ROTHSAY, MN (KVRR) – There were signs, but it was only late last year that 63-year-old Finn Abrahamson really got the sense that something was wrong.
“He could grab something with his left hand and wouldn’t know what it was. And then he could put it in his right hand and he’d know exactly what it was,” explained his daughter, Emma Silvernail.
So he left his home in Rothsay to get checked out by specialists at Sanford in Fargo – and the diagnosis couldn’t have been worse.
Stage four glioblastoma. A brain tumor that won’t even respond to radiation or other typical cancer treatments.
“He said if he were to try and operate on it, it would lead to a shorter lifespan and leave him paralyzed on his left side,” said Silvernail.
Still, Finn, or Afi as his family calls him (that’s Icelandic for grandpa) has always retained his wisecracking attitude and sense of adventure- and he’s told them he wants to traverse as much of the classic Route 66 as he can before his time comes.
The family has started a GoFundMe to purchase an RV for the trip and cover travel expenses.
So far, they’ve raised a little over two thousand dollars, which is already impressive, but they need more if they’re going to make Finn’s final months truly special.
They want to give him the send-off their beloved Afi deserves.

The sooner contributions come in, the better – the family plans to get on the road next week to maximize their remaining time.
