Fargo police chief on how local police deal with immigration-related issues

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski gave commissioners an overview of how his department deals with immigration-related issues.
He says there needs to be an actual or alleged violation of state law or city ordinance for local police to get involved.
But Zibolski says their main focus is peacekeeping when safety of the public or law enforcement is about to be compromised.
The department does not make immigration arrests, that is the federal government’s role.
They will detain a suspect if the officer believes they are in violation of federal immigration law and until immigration officials respond.
“Fortunately we have not had any significant issues in Fargo which is good. Our folks do an outstanding job of balancing the Constitutional rights of everyone, all sides of the equation in ensuring safety for everyone,” said Zibolski.
He says the entire department just completed training on immigration and their role in it along with training on how to handle protest activities to ensure safety.
