Former Cass County deputy sentenced for possessing child porn

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Former Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy Carson Quam is sentenced to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to five counts of possessing child porn in a plea deal.

Five other counts were dismissed.

The judge also ordered Quam to serve three years of probation following his sentence and register as a sex offender.

Quam resigned in September 2024 after being charged with ten counts of possessing child porn.

Carson was accused of having child porn on his phone showing adults having sex with kids believed to be between the ages of 2 and 14.

His wife, Kayla, was also placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

Both worked in the patrol division.

Sheriff Jesse Jahner released a statement after sentencing that said, in part, “In my opinion, no sentence is enough when children are victimized by crime. We hope that the full length of the sentence will be served and that Carson will find a way to apologize to the victims, our community, and our agency for his actions.”

“I have learned of the sentence that was given to Carson Quam earlier today. This is a situation that was hard for our community, hard for the men and women of our agency who work daily to maintain a high level of professionalism, and most definitely for the victims who were exploited through this activity. In my opinion, no sentence is enough when children are victimized by crime. We hope that the full length of the sentence will be served and that Carson will find a way to apologize to the victims, our community, and our agency for his actions.  I would like to personally thank the North Dakota Bureau of Investigation for its investigation. Investigations involving current law enforcement officers are inherently challenging and uncomfortable. In this case, however, the ND BCI conducted a thorough and professional investigation, remaining impartial and upholding the rule of law regardless of the individual involved.”
