Moorhead’s Lindberg Brothers Set to Join North Dakota Hockey Next Season Together

FARGO (KVRR) – Gavin Lindberg is coming home—and he’s not coming alone.

The former Moorhead Spud is transferring to North Dakota after two seasons at Colorado College, where he tallied 31 points on 11 goals and 20 assists. The move became official early Thursday morning, first reported by Tyler Young. But beyond the numbers and the roster impact, this transfer carries something deeper—family.

“I think when I entered the portal and North Dakota called, it was kind of a dream come true,” Gavin said.

That dream becomes even more meaningful with the arrival of his younger brother, UND commit Garrett Lindberg, a defenseman currently playing for the Fargo Force. For the first time in their lives, the two will share the ice as teammates.

“It’s really exciting to be able to play with him,” Gavin said. “We’ve never done that, so it’s really special for our family… a lot of texts and everyone just kind of talking about how special it’s going to be for us to play together.”

Despite growing up skating together on backyard rinks and frozen ponds, the brothers were always separated by age and opportunity. That changes now in Grand Forks.

“We skated on ponds when we were younger, but we’ve always been three years apart, so we never got the chance to play with each other,” Garrett said. “To play with each other is a really special moment for us and our family.”

The Lindbergs’ connection to North Dakota hockey runs deep. Raised just across the river in Moorhead, Minnesota, they grew up immersed in the tradition and atmosphere of UND hockey.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing in North Dakota,” Gavin said. “I was a big Sioux fan. I remember them winning in 2016, and I was pretty pumped up.”

Garrett echoed the sentiment.

“Our whole family kind of grew up Sioux fans, going to games when we were younger,” he said. “Now to kind of play there with him is a pretty special moment.”

While the storyline of brothers sharing a roster is nothing new in college athletics, it does bring a lighthearted subplot—who gets the nameplate rights.

The last brother duo at North Dakota came during the 2016-17 season with Tucker and Colton Poolman. Now, the Lindbergs could face a similar situation.

“Yeah, I saw some funny things online about it, but I don’t know what they’re going to do,” said Garrett. “Obviously, kind of the same start of the name, so it’ll be interesting. I’d like to battle it out, but he’s got the older brother card, so he probably gets the first pick.”

Jokes aside, Garrett is most excited about the time they’ll finally get to spend together.

“I’d probably just say off the ice,” he said. “For the past three, four years, we’ve both been playing junior hockey our separate ways. We don’t really see each other much during the year. So just hanging out in the locker room and getting a new opportunity with him is pretty cool.”

That opportunity extends beyond the rink. With Grand Forks just a short drive from Moorhead, the Lindberg family is expected to be a regular presence at games next season—turning each home night into something close to a family gathering.

For the Lindbergs, what started as a childhood dream is about to become a shared reality—one shift, one game, and one season at a time.
