MINOT, N.D. (KVRR) – A new Class A baseball champion was crowned in Minot on Saturday.

After defeating West Fargo in the state semifinals — a rematch of the EDC semifinals — Fargo South faced defending state champion West Fargo Sheyenne with a title on the line. And from the start, the Bruins were in complete control.

Led by a dominant performance on the mound from Texas A&M commit Caden Nelson, Fargo South rolled to the state championship. Nelson went the distance, allowing just one run while striking out eight batters, including the final out that sent the Bruins into celebration mode.

“It was a matter of just continuing to execute each pitch for sure,” Nelson said. “You know, you don’t want to get ahead of yourself. You can see the finish line, but it’s not truly there yet until that final out happens. And once it happened, then the emotions came in and they started rushing. And it was no better feeling, for sure.”

The championship marks the second state title in program history for Fargo South and the first since 2011.

For head coach Nathan Sillerud, the title was the result of a group that bought into the work long before the postseason began.

“They’re a hard-working group,” Sillerud said. “They work really hard in the weight room. They put in extra effort outside of just practice times doing individual lessons and stuff. And I think they just all bought in.

“They’re really a tight-knit group. They just wanted it all year long, and we told them at the beginning of the year it’s a special group and you guys have the ability, so it’s up to you guys on what you do with it.”

This season, the Bruins made the most of that ability — and now they’re bringing a state championship trophy back to South Fargo.
