Area students go to Scrubs Boot Camp to learn about careers in nursing

FARGO — Some area high school students got a chance to learn how to treat severe bleeding with the help of experts at Essentia Health.
Twenty-seven students heard from current Essentia ER nurses on what it’s like to work in their field.
They also received training on how to stop a patient from bleeding out by using pressure, packing wounds, and proper tourniquet placement.
Students trained on a medical dummy as well as on pink cylinders that simulated various wounds.
Instructors say the camp gives students a chance to see all the different possibilities that a career in nursing has to offer.
“I think coming to a day, like scrubs camp, where you get to evaluate different areas within the hospital kind of can show you that there’s a lot more to the profession of nursing besides just being at the clinic or being at the inpatient bedside. There’s a lot of different things you can do,” said Vicky Black, an ER nurse and trauma program manager with Essentia.
A similar scrubs camp was held at Essential Health’s Wahpeton location.
