Returning Citizen Celebrates Wedding

The community is celebrating second chances and a wedding.

Cass County Jail leaders host their annual Second Chances picnic at Trollwood Park. And this year, one of the former inmates, or returning citizens, is getting married.

Melvin Lewis served seven years in jail and is now celebrating his second chance. His jail chaplain Mike Sonju conducted the service.

Nearly 500 guests are expected at the reception and picnic.

“They can’t hardly find a place to live, they can’t find a job, it’s very difficult. And so when they see the community come together and support them in a way like this and come out and allow them to serve, it really adds to their self-esteem and it just says we care,” says Executive Director for Jail Chaplains Gerri Leach.

The food was served by former inmates and everyone was welcome to join in on the festivities.
