School is out the weather is nice and that means you’ll find kids out on their bikes enjoying summer vacation.
AAA (triple-A) wants to make sure they’re safe.
KVRR’s Brittany Ford tells us how they’re doing that.
The AAA Bike Safety Event is held to teach children the importance of wearing a helmet.
Free helmets were handed out and kids waiting in line couldn’t wait to put them to good use.
“I’m really excited, because sometimes I crash my bike and sometimes the crash gets really close to my head,” said 11-year old Adham Mahmoud.
“It feels pretty awesome to have a helmet that fits just right. I’ve had one before but this one fits a little bit better,” said 7-year old Adian McEwen.
Statistics have shown that a third of children that wear helmets don’t wear them properly. At today’s event not only did children get a free helmet they also got it fitted exactly to their heads.
AAA hopes to reduce the number of kids admitted to emergency rooms, due to bicycle accidents that can cause head injuries.
It’s also is an opportunity to change how kids view wearing a helmet.
” By Promoting their use amongst the families, and having the kids see other kids getting helmets they understand that it’s something that is acceptable. That kid’s do like wearing their helmets and when they get home they should be wearing them and having fun with them,” said AAA Spokesman Gene LaDoucer.
Eager to get home, many of the kids knew just what the rest of the day would look like.
“what are you going to do after this event? totally go ride my bike”

AAA is a partner of the “I got caught program” that rewards children across the state with free DQ ice cream when “caught” by law enforcement wearing their helmets.
