Plans for a $5 million Japanese garden in Moorhead may soon become reality.

The Moorhead City Council supports a plan that will transform the former city power plant site near Woodlawn Park into a cultural center.

The Northern Plains Botanic Garden Society says the project will make the area a site people will want to travel to.

It would be available to host weddings, anniversaries and other events.

The group says they need to raise $2.5 million to get the project off the ground.

“Economically it’s going to be a huge attraction. You know, both Fargo and Moorhead have talked about developing a more economic downtown. This is going to be a huge draw,” said Northern Plains Botanic Garden Society President Jim Anderson.

The city council will meet early next month and is expected to approve the agreement.
If the money is raised, the group will sign a long term lease for the property.
