Detroit Lakes Anglers Give Fishing Tips For This Season

Warmer waters in Minnesota mean it’s time to hit the lakes and go fishing.

It’s still early in the season but anglers are out trying to catch what they can.

Not everyone is an expert in fishing but I spoke with a few avid anglers who share some advice for the season.

“It’s the American way. If you don’t go fishing, you got to go do something else, like mow the grass or rake the yard or paint the house. See? See the choices?” says Quality Bait and Tackle owner John Store.

We hear he’s the go-to guy in town for fish bait and he’s also the guy to ask for some fishing tips.

First things first, Store says don’t start out making this common mistake.

Store says, “They try to do everything they see on TV.”

Store says fishing shouldn’t be complicated; the simpler the better.

“What we recommend is plain hooks, or jig. And just keep it simple, put a barber on it and cast out. A little patience really helps,” says Store.

Patience seems to be the one thing anglers agree on.

But is there a way to get a faster bite?

This Detroit Lakes man says that it sometimes depends on the fish’s attitude.

“And it’s how you present your menu. If you put a lot of nice things on your hook sometimes the fish is more hungry than other times,” says angler Steven Hoffer.

Another tip anglers say is if you’re not getting a bite, to fan cast.

Covering more water will increase your chances on catching a fish.

Right now, crappies and sunfish are the two that many want to reel in.

“I mean, that’s two of the best eating fish there is,” says Store.

For others, it’s about putting their patience to the test and waiting for the most sought after fish.

“Probably going to wait for the Walleye opener, it’s kind of a special holiday around here,” says Hoffer.

The Walleye opener is on May 14th.
