A flood warning has been extended for river locations in Cass and Clay Counties.

Flooding isn’t anything new for the Fargo–Moorhead area.

KVRR spoke earlier with a camper staying at the Lindenwood Park who says he has dealt with river levels rising before and tells us how he prepares.

Mark Mobley lived on a farm for many years where flooding was a constant occurrence.

He says that now is not a time to worry.

Camper Mark Mobley says, “After it rains, it takes a little while for it to reach this point so even if it rains again tonight it’ll be a little while before it gets down here. With the new smartphones and all that – they keep you informed.”

There’s a chances to see flooding in the Fargo–Moorhead areas in both spring and summer but there is a difference.

KVRR Chief Meteorologist Rob Kupec says, “Summer floods here they kind of make a mess of all our recreation areas but it’s very rare that we get a summer flood that gets enough rain.”

KVRR’s Chief Meteorologist Rob Kupec says what determines flooding is based on where the rainfall occurs.

Kupec says, “It will depend on how widespread the rain is tonight. If it’s fairly localized then the river might come up a little. If it’s a widespread heavy rain then you could see more significant rising.”

If the area were to flood the city of Fargo has a plan.

Nathan Boerboom says, “If we got a lot more rain we’d maybe have to look at doing a small temporary levee on 2nd Street South or North in the downtown area.”

This year we didn’t see a flood like we’ve seen in previous years.

So there’s money to work on projects for future flood control.

The City of Fargo Division Engineer says, “The project that is on-going now 2nd Street South and North here is part of a flood litigation project that will help eliminate the need to do any temporary measures on a summer flood like this.”

Grand Forks is also under a Flood Warning this evening.
