Get ready Fargo! It now might be quicker to get a ride home because Uber is officially up and running.
Users are now able to get safe rides at a low cost through the Uber app. Once you’ve downloaded it, simply enter your location and a driver will pick you up within minutes.
Uber says they have seen a reduction in drinking and driving related incidents in cities that already have the program. They also say that driving an Uber is safer than a cab.
“One thing that makes it unsafe for a taxi driver historically is the fact that they would have to carry a stack of cash everywhere that they go. And once you take that away you actually reduce the chance that that person is going to get robbed and you increase the level of safety,” says General Manager of Uber Expansion Sagar Shah.
Several North Dakota legislators helped pass legislation that made it easier to bring Uber to Fargo.
“We probably had 20 hours of testimony on that committee as this bill went through the process and we had zero testimony and zero input from cab drivers that came and said this was something they were against or cab companies,” says St. Sen. Jonathan Casper.
Mayor Mahoney was the first person to use Uber in Fargo. He got picked up at the Fargo Theatre.
