Students in Wahpeton hit their target not only when it comes to grades.
Winning the state competition, these kids of all ages are mastering the art of archery.
Lauren Hibl who’s a part of the team said, “You can like try and compete against yourself, to try and do better. and then you can go out and have fun with your friends.”
Following in his brother’s footsteps in archery Dylan Pearson said, “People can’t really judge you on how you shoot archery, people can’t make fun of you on your stance or how you shoot or anything.”
Their head coach says the kids change from timid to confidante.
Head Coach Gaylord Hibl said,”After they’ve been in it for a little while, and get comfortable around other kids, and stuff they’re moving around and they’re making new friends. They’re having fun.”
So, I had to try it out myself, and it’s not easy! But it is a sport that is allowing anyone to be a part of a team.
Tyler is living with a disability, but it hasn’t stopped him from hitting his target Using a brace and release system, he made a personal record at this year’s national tournament in Kentucky, and it’s also changed him as a person.
Assistant Head Coach Heather Goroski said, “I’m fortunate, he lives a couple houses down from me. So I see him walking to and from school, he’s becoming more social, and saying hi and stopping by the house. And you can just see he’s having fun, and just watching his personality grow as he grows in the sport is phenomenal.”
And as they improve their aim, they improve themselves.
This marks the second year in a row that the team has won the state tournament.
