It’s A Great Day For Running When Donuts Are Involved

An early morning run is pretty sweet when you have donuts to fill you up.

The sixth annual Sandy’s Donut Run took off this morning at 8 am, just in time for morning coffee.

Runners could compete in either a 5K race or a 10K.

“Just seeing all the people coming out and enjoying this. It’s a beautiful day out in November and it’s a great way to end the running season,” says Donut Run Assistant Director, Sue Knutson.

Whether runners came in first or last place, they were still given treats.

“You get a t-shirt, a medal and you get Sandy’s donuts during the race and after the race,” says Sue.

With the seasons changing, this could be the last opportunity for runners to enjoy the fresh air.

“I think a lot of people train for a lot of events in the summer and the fall and I think this is their last hoorah. I know some people that have trained for this because this is going to be their run for the year,” says Sue.

And for some runners, the training just comes naturally. They say that the best way to prepare for these runs is to participate in previous runs that Fargo has to offer.

“Well, I have been training. I did a couple races earlier this month. I did one with Bemidji, the Bemidji marathon, and I also did the Fargo mini-marathon a couple of weeks ago. So I kind of just kept running a little bit for fun,” says First Place Winner of the 10K, Sam Dwyer.

While Sandy’s set up a donut pit stop in the middle of the race, Dwyer says he prefers coffee and hot chocolate at the finish line.

“Just because the donut in the stomach while running doesn’t sound appetizing.
If I were to go a little bit slower than maybe, but trying to run fast and having a donut in your stomach digesting it doesn’t sound appealing to me,” says Sam.

Donuts or not, the race helps support those in need.

“It’s something fun but we do also make donations back every year to different charitable organizations. Homeless shelters we’ve done before and a couple of other places we’ve given donations to after the race,” says Sue.

Luckily, donuts did not go to waste with some very hungry runners ready to eat.
