Sanford Health Tackles Statewide Obesity Problem

North Dakotans are losing the battle with the bulge – the ninth fattest folks in the nation, medical experts say.
 
Sanford Health officials say more than 30 percent of are obese, up more than 20 percent from 16 years ago.

Local and national obesity experts are at an all-day Sanford symposium here in Fargo.

Two hundred people attended the health talk on prevention, treatment options and when to consider bariatric surgery.

“The science of obesity is growing a lot and people are taking it more seriously as a disease now. So I think there will be some interesting changes in the next decade,” says UND professor Dr. James Mitchell.

Doctor Mitchell says a good start is approach looking at both the diet and exercise.

Then find a routine that you can stick with over time.
