Rapid City Man Killed in Standoff with Police

Police say the man waved his gun at officers from an apartment window and refused commands

RAPID CITY, SD — A man was shot and killed by an officer in a Rapid City standoff which started as a welfare check.

Authorities say the 53-year-old man pointed a pistol at the first officer who arrived at his apartment.

The officer retreated and called for backup.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
