UPDATED: Ramsey County Deputy Sentenced in K-9 Abuse Case

A Minnesota Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy is ordered to pay a fine for striking his police dog.

Brett Berry is to pay $1,300 in restitution and other fines.

Berry pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty after he was seen on surveillance footage hitting and slamming his K-9 partner, Boone, to the ground while the two were attending certification trials.

Court officials are surprised by the amount of fury from the public.

Protesters are outraged that Berry won’t be serving jail time if he follows the rules of his probation.

Some conditions include not using or possessing drugs or alcohol.

Berry was charged in June with animal cruelty and assaulting a public safety dog, which will be dropped as part of a plea agreement.

This was caught on surveillance when the two were attending K-9 certification trials this summer.

Berry said he was “blackout drunk” when he hit the dog.

His sentencing is scheduled for February 17.
