Student Safety Top Priority for North Dakota Lawmakers

Campus security is the main focus of a legislative meeting at NDSU.

The state has given North Dakota’s colleges and universities three million dollars for safety upgrades.

At NDSU, there’s controversy over the ending of an agreement that allowed University police to have jurisdiction off of campus.

Members of the student government say renewing the memorandum with the Fargo Police Department will improve security on campus.

“Obviously we’re gonna have some kinks,” says Student Government member Jacob Dailey, “and we’re looking at potentially looking to see if we can return back to the way things were in the past when we did have a memorandum between the city and our campus police officers.”

State officials say they can’t guarantee budget cuts at North Dakota’s colleges won’t hamper efforts to improve security, but they’re hopeful the schools will put a priority on student safety.
