Hjemkomst Sailors Share 2014 Voyage

Original crew members from the Hjemkomst viking ship voyage from Duluth to Oslo 30 years ago, share their 2014 trip in the opposite direction.

Paul Hesse and Mark Hilde, took part in a four person crew to complete an east–to–west voyage through the North Atlantic.

This follows the same path the Vikings sailed more than 1,000 years ago.

The ship departed from Norway, went to Iceland, then Greenland and made its way home to North America.

The presentation showed a slideshow of the sailors telling their tales.

“People get excited, especially the ones who were growing up during the years the Hjemkomst was so prominent and they love to hear the stories of the crew members. I think that’s the most exciting thing,” says Historical and Cultural Society Executive Director Maureen Kelly Jonason.

If you missed the presentation, you can still visit the Hjemkomst Center to learn more about the voyages.
