Mild Weather in December Helps North Dakota Agriculture

Crops and livestock in the state are in good condition due to mild weather.

El Nino is benefiting the winter wheat and stress of livestock.

The latest crop report shows that the light snow cover is used as insulation and protects the winter wheat.

71% of the crop is in good to excellent conditions.

The report also says cattle, calf, sheep and lamb conditions are rated 88% in good conditions.

“Let’s just see how the rest of the year takes us. We got a lot of winter left and a little bit of spring. It will determine how well the winter wheat gets going in the spring,” says NDSU’s Extension Agronomist Joel Ransom.

This report indicates that conditions are looking favorable in this growing season in comparison to the previous winters.
