VALLEY CITY, N.D. (KVRR/KFGO) — Two men had to be rescued after a sheet of ice broke away from the shores of Lake Ashtabula, north of Valley City.

The rescue happened Saturday night.

Valley City Fire Chief Scott Magnuson says two people walked out, pulling their ice shed behind.

While fishing, they heard a loud crack or bang.

When they looked, the ice was gone from the shore to about 100 yards out into the lake.

The men used social media to notify others since they were not able to make a cellphone call.

Magnuson said it took rescue crews more than two hours to bring the men to safety.

Members of the fire department put on water-rescue suits and used a boat and ropes.

No one was injured.
