Have Patience and Make Way for Snow Plows!

Snow crews have been busy all day in the metro, cleaning up the mess left behind by our latest storm.

Snow plow operators say patience from drivers goes a long way in helping them do their job safely.

The supervisor of Fargo Public Works says most drivers don’t realize in an accident snow plows usually don’t lose to vehicles.

Mitchell Elfering of Dilworth says he doesn’t mind sharing the roads.

“I personally try to stay off streets when I know the snow is coming down so they don’t have to work around my car,” said Mitchell.

He also says using side streets are a good alternative.

“I’ll give them a good 60, 70 to 80 feet, and if I come up with on a turn that I know I can use and get to work in a similar fashion. I’ll just hop on that different road so I don’t have to trail behind them,” said Mitchell.

“You know they get right on you thinking you can move easier than you really can,” said Snow Plow Operator Mike Baumgartner.

Snow plow operators like Mike stress that drivers use patience and courtesy while they are out on the roads.

Fargo Public works says to ensure safety, it is best to stay at least 50 feet back while driving behind a snow plow.

He says drivers for the most part are courteous, but there is always that one exception to the rule.

“Sometimes, but a lot of times like today I haven’t seen too much they’re been pretty good giving us some space, but sometimes they do want to get in a hurry and try to get by you,” said Mike.

Fargo Public Works will be plowing up to 12,000 lane miles within the next 24 hours.
