Suspect in northern Valley homicide shot by Grand Forks County deputy

LARIMORE, N.D. — The Grand Forks County Sheriff is releasing the names of the men — one wounded, one shot to death — in connection with a SWAT team incident earlier this week.
Sheriff Andy Schneider says two deputies were in the city of Larimore and responded immediately to a call of a shooting at around 1:24 PM Saturday at 502 West 8th Street in town.
Deputies discovered the shooter had shot at both a male and a female at the home, hitting the man, the woman fleeing.
Deputies identified the man as Troy R. Larson, 43, who lives in the home.
They identified the victim as Jamey Holwegger, 64, also of Larimore, who is related to Larson.
Holwegger died at the scene.
Officers established a perimeter and SWAT and the drone team responded to the house.
Nearby residents were told to evacuate or shelter in place.
SWAT breached the front door using a ram on its vehicle after the suspect refused orders to surrender.
The sheriff’s office says he fired several rounds and eventually came outside, wearing a bathrobe with something weighing down one of the pockets.
Larson allegedly became non-compliant and reached for his right pocket.
That was when Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ryan Wadlow fired a round from his AR-15, hitting Larson in the back.
Larson was treated on scene by SWAT team paramedics and transported to Altru.
The Sheriff’s office says they do not know his current condition.
The State Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
