Bison baseball takes down SDSU in extra innings

BROOKINGS, SD (NDSU/KVRR) – Cadyn Schwabe delivered a clutch RBI single in the 11th inning to help the North Dakota State baseball team edge South Dakota State, 7-6, in an 11-inning marathon on Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

With the win, the Bison (18-25-1, 13-9-1 Summit) have won each of their last four games and secured their sixth Summit League series of the season. With the loss, South Dakota State drops to 18-27 (9-15 Summit) on the season.

NDSU combined for a season-high 15 strikeouts after using six different pitchers in the contest. Logan Knight made the start throwing eight strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Seth Thompson (2-0) earned the win with one strikeout over 1.1 innings, while Hunter Rosenbaum picked up his first career save finishing the final inning with one strikeout.

The Bison totaled eight hits as a team with Sam Canton setting the pace with four RBI, two hits and one run.

NDSU grabbed an early 3-1 lead in the third inning after Canton launched his second three-run home run of weekend to right field. Luke Luskey answered for the Jackrabbits in the bottom half of the third with a two-run home run of his own to lock the contest, 3-3, after three complete innings.

Canton once again regained the lead for NDSU with an RBI ground out to make the score 4-3 in the fifth inning. Davis Hamilton closed out the frame for the Bison with a two RBI home run to right field to stretch the advantage to 6-3. Luskey responded for the Jackrabbits in the bottom half with his second home run of the contest to cut the deficit to two, 6-4, through five complete frames.

The Jackrabbits continued to pull their way back to lock the contest after Dawson Parry connected on a solo home run in the seventh and Cael Frost added another solo home run in the ninth to tie the game, 6-6. Schwabe broke through for NDSU with an RBI single in the 11th inning to score Will Busch to secure the 7-6 victory.

NDSU will conclude its series at South Dakota State tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
