ST. PAUL, Minn. (KVRR) — The man accused of swinging a hatchet at police in Crookston last week has been identified.

Police shot 35-year-old Andrew Dale who later died at a hospital.

On May 16, they came across Dale just before 1 a.m. around 7th Street East.

He rapidly approached officers and less lethal means were deployed and then when he charged at officers again, he was shot.

Minnesota BCA says Officer Nick Fladland fired his department handgun, Officer Alex Rudnik deployed his Taser, while Polk County Deputy Matt Benge fired 40 mm foam less-lethal rounds.

Fladland is on critical incident leave.
